Apple iPhone 8 and 8 Plus review roundup

Image
Every year around this time Apple releases its new iPhones and every year we get a few early reviews in just before the phone goes on sale. But this time, Apple has a more interesting phone coming out in November - the iPhone X - casting a shadow over the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus - are they still worth it with a design dating back to 2014? Let's see what the reviewers say. The consensus is that the Apple iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are let down by a tired design that's built on huge bezels and familiar aesthetics, but the new camera, wireless charging and chip partially make up for it. Engadget praises the iPhone 8 duo on the new excellent camera and a promising AR implementation but takes a point away for the design, despite the use of "grippier" glass. TheVerge makes mostly the same points - fast new processor, excellent camera and having wireless charging is nice. But Nilay Patel isn't too thrilled with the stiff design either. Unlocked Moto X4 with Motorola software will come to the U.S. this year

Image
This is really good news for Motorola fans. One of the big questions coming out of Google's announcement of the Android One Moto X4 coming to Project Fi was what impact this had on the release of a "normal" Motorola version in the U.S. Thankfully, Motorola has confirmed to Android Central that there will be a standard, unlocked, Motorola software version of the Moto X4 hitting the U.S. this year. That means it would no longer be part of the Android One program, and would offer all of the Motorola-specific features and tweaks so many of us enjoy using. On the other side of the coin, it's also likely to have more relaxed standards in terms of a commitment to software updates. It looks like a really nice phone, but it's probably not worth changing carriers for. This is a big sigh of relief for those who were intrigued by the idea of the mid-range Moto X4 being a great phone at a reasonable $399 price, but weren't willing (or able) to switch carrie

New update starts hitting Sony Xperia XZ and X Performance

Image
Sony has started pushing out a new update to its Xperia XZ and X Performance smartphones. Arriving as version 41.2.A.7.65, the update brings along Android security fixes for the month of September. There's currently no information on what other changes (if any) the update includes. The roll out is currently limited to a few regions, although it's expected to expand in the near future. Aside from Sony, Google and Nokia have also pushed out the latest security patch to some of their devices. Apple iPhone X (or Edition) sized up to all previous iPhones

Image
It's only a few days until Apple finally shows off its next generation iPhones and we're becoming fervent. So it's only natural that we'll be all over any leaks and rumors and best of all - images of the upcoming device. Apple is expected to show off the incremental upgrades iPhone 7s and 7s Plus with the same screen size and general design as sidekicks to the 10 anniversary iPhone 8 with a edge-to-edge OLED display. Courtesy of RedmondPie, which managed to obtain a mockup of the iPhone 8 (or X, or Editon) based on rumored blueprints and schematics, we get to see how the next-gen iPhone looks compared to its peers. The iPhone 8 looks slightly bigger than the 4.7-inch iPhone 6S and a lot smaller than the 5.5-inch iPhone 7S Plus. Compared to the latter the iPhone 8 has a taller screen. If you do the math the iPhone 8's 5.8-inch 18:9 display has slightly more surface area than the 16:9 5.5-inch display of the iPhone 7 Plus but if you're co

Promo videos for the Moto X4 are up

Earlier today Motorola finally decided to make the incredibly oft-leaked Moto X4 official, as you may know if you've already gone through our post covering the announcement. The company is eager to showcase its latest smartphones in video form, and as such it has already uploaded two promotional creations to its YouTube channel. The first one lets us know that the X4's tagline is "Hello Perfection" - you'll be the judge of how well that works for a mid-ranger. Next up, we're told that the new device comes with both style and substance - not an easy feat to achieve. Oh, and also dual rear cameras of course.                                       The Moto X4 will land in Europe first, at some point in September, priced at €399. Stay tuned for more info on the highly anticipated member of the X-series, as well as a hands-on review.
